Overview

Fantastic Wok, nestled at 170 University Ave W in Waterloo, offers an inviting window into authentic Chinese cuisine with a special focus on noodle and rice dishes that satisfy both appetite and wallet. As a Chinese restaurant in a lively student area, it strikes a balance between affordability and ample portions, catering mainly to students and anyone seeking a hearty, quick meal on the go.

Their menu shines with standout items like the Beef Ho Fun with XO Sauce and the beef sirloin ramen—a Shandong-style noodle soup that brings a comforting depth of flavors. The Fried Shanghai Noodles deserve a special mention, featuring variations from beef and shrimp to chili pepper-infused combinations, each delivering a distinct regional flair. The Jiangxi rice noodles and chilli-style rice bowls further enrich the selection, offering a palate of spicy and savory tastes that feel genuine, reflecting the diverse Chinese culinary traditions.

Customer experiences highlight generous portions and dishes that lean toward authenticity rather than fusion, creating straightforward yet satisfying meals. The inclusion of free soup or side dishes enhances the value, an important factor for the predominantly student clientele. While the food quality impresses for the price, the space is noted as quiet but occasionally lacking in cleanliness, suggesting room for improvement in the dining environment.

Speed and service efficiency are noted strengths, with many opting for takeout—ideal for busy days or casual cravings. The menu’s breadth means variety is abundant, though it may make pinpointing the absolute best dishes a challenge. Still, many praise the authenticity and flavor profiles, particularly the black bean noodles and brown sauce pork.

In sum, Fantastic Wok stands out as a practical, affordable, and relatively authentic choice for Chinese dining in Waterloo’s university district. It is best experienced with an appetite for traditional noodle and rice dishes that bring reliable comfort without a hefty price tag. Those seeking the absolute finest dining ambiance or elevated refinement might look elsewhere, but for value-centered, authentic Chinese flavors served swiftly and generously, Fantastic Wok holds its own as a solid hidden gem.

They offers a wide selection of affordable menu options for around 10 buck + free soup. The portions were generous, and we were able to leave feeling full and satisfied. However, the cleanliness of the restaurant left much to be desired, as the table we were seated at was quite sticky. Despite this, the food was decent(would recommend staying away from item with heavy sauce tho), and the prices were hard to beat, cheapest restaurants in the plaza. Overall, this restaurant is a great choice for a quick and inexpensive meal for students.

It’s nice that they now include a side dis bec before it was just unlimited soup. They serve generous portions, and I initially thought the Tso’s chicken didn’t have any sauce, but it actually turned out great. My husband really enjoyed the fish, idk the name haha We’ll definitely be coming back!

Great black bean noodles, prices and service. I tried their chilli beef and black bean noodle (F19). It taste like authentic Cantonese black bean rice noodles and the price was good (12 something after tax). It was barely spicy as is common with this dish. Food was made fast too on a Sunday evening. I took my food to go. The portion had a lot of sliced beef, and came with mushrooms, broccoli and carrots (so not exactly what your usual Cantonese black bean noodles come with) but still very good. I thought the vegetables were delicious. The noodles were slippery and tasty. I’m surprised how good this dish. I will be back!

One of the best Chinese restaurants in the plaza. Was very surprised by the quality and authenticity of the food. The price is fair and portions are decent. This is my new go to Chinese restaurant in the plaza. I ordered pork with brown sauce, boiled beef and cabbage with black fungus. I recommend bringing someone who understands Chinese to help read the menu.

Generally decent Chinese restaurant in the plaza, but also nothing to call home about except for the value. The food was cheap and the portion sizes were decently sized - overall great value. On days where they give free soup, the value is even better. It's quite a quiet restaurant, with the place usually less than a quarter full if not empty. Overall, there's a lot to choose from on the menu, with an assortment of dishes ranging from rice combo dishes, noodles, Shandong ramen, set dinners, regular chicken/beef/seafood/vegetable Chinese dishes etc. I personally got the fried tofu, fish, and vegetable rice dish. It was pretty decent and quite authentic Chinese food (especially when comparing to other food in the plaza), but at the same time it's definitely not the best food I've had by far. My friends got the dinner for 5 and the food seemed generally good, but again not out of this world. The soup was also decent. I also got the fried beef ho fun to go for lunch the next day, and as expected, not bad but not amazing as well. My sneaking suspicion is that there are some dishes on their menu that are genuinely amazing, but due to the breadth of their menu, it's hard to pinpoint which ones those are. Overall, I think this probably one of the more hidden gems in the plaza. While the food itself is decent, you'd be coming mainly for the value - a good quality to have for a restaurant located to so many students. Would come again. 3.5/5 stars

It’s great. Not a lot of people, but it’s pretty regular food and with a good sized portion for its price. Very much asian style, it’s like Mini wok, or zhi char, if you’re singaporean. Also, if you go to UW or WL you get a 10% discount, so all the more reason to come here!

Amazing authentic Chinese dishes from all over China! The highlight for us was the pork belly in Shandong noodles, which were just the right texture and seasoning. The staff were very helpful and kind. In addition, the restaurant offered a complementary savoury seaweed egg drop soup the Wednesday we came. We can't wait to be back, and explore more dishes this establishment has to offer!
